An Automotive Service Technician or a Truck and Coach Technician inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and services mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems and components of cars, buses, and trucks.
This program combines instruction at Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School and Centennial College and provides a Cooperative Education placement in the automotive or truck and coach repair and maintenance industry. This is a 2-year program. It is offered in Semester 2 and is open to students in Grade 11 and Grade 12.
To qualify, YOU must:
- Be at least 16 years of age
- Have an interest in transportation technology
- Be in good academic standing
- Demonstrate strong work habits and a positive attitude
- Have a working knowledge of general mathematical principles
- Be willing to travel across the GTA for classes and a Cooperative Education placement
- Have minimum Grade 11 Workplace Mathematics
Candidates will be interviewed by a selection committee which includes industry partners. A limited number of spaces are available.
Program components include:For Grade 11 and 12 students applying for YEAR ONE of this 2-year program (the
pre-apprenticeship portion):
- During Semester I of the current school year, students attend their home schools (4 classes)
- During Semester II of the current school year, students attend their home schools in the morning (2 classes) and Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School and Centennial College in the afternoon (2 classes)
- During Semester I of the following school year, students attend their home schools (4 classes)
- During Semester II of the following school year, students attend classes at Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School and Centennial College for the full day (4 classes). This becomes YEAR TWO of your program.
For Grade 12 students with a great deal of hands-on experience in the industry who are applying for YEAR TWO only (the apprenticeship portion):
- Students attend their home schools in Semester I of the current school year (4 classes)
- During Semester II of the current school year, students attend classes at Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School and Centennial College for the full day (4 classes)
Program Credits/Certification:Upon successfully completing the program, you will:
- Earn 2 credits in Semester II of YEAR ONE - 2 credits at Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School and Centennial College in the afternoon (including your Cooperative Education placement) in addition to the 2 credits that you will earn in the morning at your home school
- Earn 4 credits in Semester II of YEAR TWO - all 4 credits at Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School and Centennial College (including your Cooperative Education placement)
- Successfully complete the "Level One" apprenticeship training for Automotive Service Technician with valuable work experience and extensive skills training
